KTM recently updated its international portfolio with the launch of the 890 SMT. The new bike looks quite enticing given its design, hardware, electronics and more. Let's take a closer look at it.
The 2023 KTM 890 SMT features the brand’s signature headlight with vertically stacked LEDs and boomerang-shaped DRLs around it. The fascia also includes a small smoked visor with sharp side panels integrated close to it. The 890 SMT is a Supermoto offering and gets a front beak, tall riding stance and an upswept exhaust.
KTM has powered the 890 SMT with an 889cc twin-cylinder liquid-cooled motor that develops 103bhp and 68.8Nm of torque. It’s linked to a six-speed gearbox and benefits from a slipper clutch.
The KTM 890 SMT comes loaded with electronic aids like traction control, ride modes, cornering ABS, supermoto ABS, quickshifter, and cruise control. All these can be accessed by the switch cubes on the left that work in tandem with the five-inch TFT. The latter also comes with smartphone connectivity, giving you access to navigation, music, incoming calls, and KTM’s roadside assistance.
On the hardware front, the 890 SMT rides on WP’s preload and rebound adjustable front USD forks with a monoshock. Its braking setup comprises twin 320mm front discs and a single 260mm rear disc held by J Juan’s four-piston radially mounted callipers.
KTM has shod the 890 SMT’s 17-inch wheels to Michellin’s PowerGP tyres. The alloys are made to be lighter and reduce the overall unsprung mass. It gets a massive 15.8-litre fuel tank that KTM claims can munch up to 300km.
Overall, the new KTM offering seems quite desirable and is oriented towards performance for spirited riding in the mountains. That said, its entry into the Indian market is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
