Bike storage tips during lockdown

The Coronavirus outbreak has forced the government to lockdown the entire country in order to control the spread of the virus. The lockdown is currently in effect for 21-days (until 15 April 2020), although it may extend further if the number of cases does not drop substantially. Here we list a few steps that you can consider to store your motorcycle during this long duration.

Protect yourself

It’s crucial to protect yourself before stepping out of the house and going to the parking. Thus, ensure that proper safety measures are taken before you follow the steps listed below. It’s important to cover your eyes, nose and mouth before you step outside of the house. Wearing a full-sleeve shirt, jeans, shoes and gloves are important too.

Right Side

Use fuel stabiliser if available

The lockdown may last longer than expected, although the duration should not affect the fuel in your motorcycle drastically. A fuel stabiliser can protect the petrol in the tank for a longer duration. The stabiliser typically preserves the fuel for a full year. Use the stabiliser only if you already have one. Check the oil and the coolant levels and top them off if necessary.

Detach the battery

Most of the modern batteries should last for a few months, and you do not have to use a trickle charger. However, with the lack of a kick-starter in most modern-day motorcycles, it's crucial to ensure that your battery doesn’t drain itself. Simply disconnecting the battery terminals should work sufficiently well. Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first and ensure that it does not touch any part of the motorcycle before you remove the positive (+) cable.

Right Side

Use centre stand

A 21-day lockdown is a relatively short period in motorcycle storage terms, and it should not affect the tyres much. However, if available, it’s a good idea to lift the tyres from the ground to avoid flat spots.

Cover the vehicle and park under a shade

Using a parking cover can save the vehicle from elements like dust and protect the paint from direct sunlight. Tie the cover from the bottom to ensure that it is not blown away by the wind. Try to park the vehicle in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight.
