BMW Motorrad’s iconic GS series celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The R 80 G/S made a debut in 1980, thus giving birth to large-scale dual-sport motorcycle segment. The R 80 G/S was sold from 1980 to 1987 before the company introduced its successor, the R 100 GS.
The motorcycle has evolved over the years, but the Bavarian brand still uses the flat-twin Boxer engine on its flagship adventure tourer. The year 2008 witnessed the arrival of the ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) system while the motorcycle received a water-cooled engine in 2013.
The company’s current flagship adventure tourer, the R 1250 GS, received major upgrades in the form of a variable valve timing system. The motorcycle uses a 1,254cc engine that produces 132.1bhp of peak power at 7,750rpm and 143Nm of maximum torque at 6,250rpm.
BMW Motorrad also offered the F 650 GS and the F 650 GS Dakar, which used single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, to attract first time buyers.
Currently, the company offers eight products in the Adventure category – R 1250 GS Adventure, R 1250 GS, F 850 GS Adventure, F 850 GS, F 750 GS, G 310 GS, F 900 XR and the S 1000 XR. The F 900 XR and the S 1000 XR are BMW Motorrad’s road-biased, sports ADV tourers. The company’s entry-level G 310 GS is manufactured in India.
