Greaves Electric Mobility recently launched the Ampere Primus as its latest family e-scooter in India. It’s oriented towards performance and is said to be comparatively premium than its siblings in the lineup. To find out what exactly the new e-scooter offers, we rode it briefly and here’s what we think of the Ampere Primus.
At first glance, the Ampere Primus seems to take inspiration from some of the petrol scooters but we aren’t complaining as it looks fairly handsome. The overall bodywork also seems fairly modern and the styling is likeable.
The orange and black colour combination comes off as quite premium and also accentuates the scooter’s design cues. The overall quality meets the expectation but the headlamp and high-beam buttons could have a better finish.
Now, Ampere has powered the Primus with a 3kWh Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) battery that’s linked to a 3.8kW motor. Ampere says it can clock 77kmph of top speed but we saw a speedometer indicator speed of 83kmph. However, it can also vary as per the riding mode.
The Primus gets three riding modes: Eco, City and Power. The respective speeds for these modes are 45kmph, 65kmph and 77kmph. Moreover, the transition between all three riding modes is quite smooth too.
Ampere claims that the above-mentioned battery can return a range of 107km and takes five hours for a full charge using a regular charger. But with a fast charger, the time can be brought down to 2.5 hours.
The Primus’ feature list is quite short. It gets LED illumination, a digital instrument console and smartphone connectivity. However, the LCD feels cheap and needs improvement when compared to some of the other e-scooters in the market.
Once on the seat, the rider triangle feels welcoming and natural. The floorboard has good space and you sit comfortably with the handlebar well under your reach. The seat height is also accessible even if you are comparatively shorter and it has decent room for both the rider and pillion to move around.
But what about its ride quality, braking and handling? Well, to get those answers, read our first ride review of the Ampere Primus electric scooter.
