- Trademark filed back in March
- No official comments from Bajaj so far
- Could be a new EV on the charts
Bajaj Auto has filed a trademark for the name Bajaj Blade. The application dates back to March 2022 but Blade has previously served in Bajaj’s portfolio as a petrol-powered scooter. However, given the current landscape of the Indian two-wheeler market, here’s what we think of the fresh trademark filing.
New EV
With electric vehicles being the talk of the town, it makes sense for Bajaj to introduce a new model to its EV arsenal. While the Chetak is already on sale, Bajaj Blade could be a completely new model for the family. This means a new design built from the ground, probably more youthful and with more features too.
Moreover, the Chetak e-scooter has reached a price point that seems a bit tough to justify. That said, Bajaj will have to first sell enough Chetak(s) to make a concrete decision of introducing a new EV.
Bajaj’s re-entry in petrol-powered scooters
Making sure to not leave any possibility unaddressed, we think that there’s a small chance of Bajaj's re-entry into the petrol-powered scooter market. Its current portfolio only has motorcycles and no scooters. So, a slightly affordable and feature-loaded 125cc scooter in the current market would make sense. However, the Chakan-based manufacturer will have to catch the wave on time for this, unlike how it did with the recently introduced Pulsar 250(s).
Just for the sake of it
Now, a lot of manufacturers apply for various trademarks just to secure the names in case of a future application. So, Bajaj could be doing the same with the Blade.
