Motorcycles equipped with locally made ABS might soon become a common sight in India. The manufacturers are nowadays opting for locally made ABS system instead of importing it, eventually prompting high volumes of the safety feature equipment.
Manufacturers like Bosch in India are looking at locally manufacturing ABS equipment for two-wheelers. At present, the company is producing ABS for four-wheelers in India, but for two-wheelers it is being sourced from their manufacturing facility in Japan.
Kartikeya Joshi, marketing and sales head, Bosch Chassis Systems India, said, "We make four-wheeler ABS locally but in two wheelers, we are currently supporting demand through our manufacturing facility in Japan. Later on, if the market improves and the volumes pick up speed, we will take a call on manufacturing in India."
At present, ABS is available on some motorcycles from few brands. The TVS Apache RTR 180 is the cheapest bike that comes with ABS, followed by Bajaj Pulsar RS 200. Then, there are many other motorcycles ranging from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 33 lakh that have ABS as a standard/optional fitment. Installing ABS as a standard feature on higher displacement motorcycles in India might become a norm soon and local production of ABS in India might make the feature common in more motorcycles.
