- Could be equipped on BMW’s future models
- Can be switched to a manually operated stand as well
- Patent drawing leaked
BMW could be working on a new electronically assisted center stand for its big bikes. Information on the same has been revealed from a newly leaked design patent. Here’s what we know about it.
While a conventional center stand’s operation is dependent on the right technique rather than strength, having a slight amount of electronic assist would be helpful. Motorcycles of today pack rider aids which make the overall user experience better and the same could be said for a heavy motorcycle being mounted on a center stand without much physical effort. BMW’s newly patented system appears similar to a manual one but it has a sensor that takes input once the unit touches the ground.
Post that, the power assistance helps the rear end raise and the center stand engage. Further, the patent filings also reveal that the switch cube has a separate button and so does the rear grab rail to activate the center stand assistance. As mentioned earlier, the feature can be deactivated completely and the rider can also manually engage the main stand.
The new system is still under development and could take a while before we see it in application on any of the upcoming BMW bikes. That said, the firm is also working on the 1300 GS which is set to make its debut soon and could make for a suitable option to offer the center stand assistance on.
