- BMW reveals engine details and power figures of the R18 cruiser
- Churns out 91bhp of power and 158Nm of peak torque
- Expected to be launched sometime next year
BMW Motorrad is taking its own sweet time to introduce the production version of the R18 cruiser motorcycle. After unveiling the concept version of the bike at several occasions since last year, the production model was expected to be revealed at this year’s EICMA show. However, what we got to see in Milan was yet another concept which looked further closer to the production version. Now, while the wait for the final model of the R18 persists, the German bike maker has revealed the engine details along with the power figures of the cruiser.
The motorcycle packs a 1,802cc powerplant with 107mm of bore and 100mm of stroke from the aluminum pistons. For this engine, BMW has employed the over-head valve with dual camshaft design inspired by its R5 model from 1936. It houses shorter pushrods which BMW says has resulted in ‘reduced moving masses, minimized deflections and lower linear expansions.’ Also, the boxer-twin’s crankshaft features an additional main bearing at the centre in order to reduce the vibrations. Including the intake system and a constant mesh six-speed gearbox, this powerplant weighs 110.8kg.
Coming to the numbers, the 1,802cc mill of the R18 produces around 91bhp of power at 4,750rpm and 158Nm of peak torque at 3,000rpm. As revealed by the brand, over 150Nm of this torque is available from 2,000 to 4,000rpm which is clamed to deliver an astounding amount of low-end pulling power. Notably, this is the largest displacement boxer-twin motor the company has ever produced.
BMW has been spotted testing the production-spec R18 cruiser at multiple occasions before and it is expected to be launched sometime in 2020. The motorcycle will perhaps come to the Indian shores as well.
