- BMW dealers in France are accepting pre-bookings at 1,000 Euros
- Had unveiled the R18 Concept cruiser in May
- Production version will be launched in 2020
BMW is working on a cruiser motorcycle which was unveiled in its concept form in May this year. Christened as the R18 Concept, it features a retro-inspired styling which harks back to the brand’s old cruiser from 1936. While the unveiling of the R18 production version is still awaited, BMW has already started pre-bookings for the bike in France, something that is unprecedented from a bikemaker.
Reports suggest that the BMW dealers in France are accepting pre-bookings for the cruiser at 1,000 euros (Rs 78,422). The company has assured that the amount is refundable in case the motorcycle doesn’t suit the customer’s liking or the final pricing is too high.
The R18 Concept features purely classic styling with a round headlamp, wide handlebar, peanut-shaped headlamp and oodles of chrome on its engine and exhaust. Although the concept gets profoundly minimalistic body panels, the production model will sport a more practical design. The highlight of the R18 will be a new 1,800cc, air/oil-cooled, boxer twin motor which will also be used in BMW’s future models based on this platform. One of these bikes was spotted testing in April which was a touring model comprising of a huge front fairing with tall windscreen and large panniers.
As for the official launch of the final version of the R18, a BMW official had confirmed that this new cruiser will be introduced in 2020. We expect to get the first glimpse of its production model at this year’s EICMA show. Currently, BMW doesn’t have a cruiser in its portfolio and its line-up comprises of adventure tourers, streetfighters, sport tourers, sportsbikes and modern-classic roadsters.
