- Powered by BMW’s old 1,170cc boxer-twin engine
- Gets new airbox and revised cylinder head covers
- Unlikely to arrive on the Indian shores
BMW Motorrad has globally unveiled the new R12 cruiser. It’s the smaller sibling of the more premium R18 cruiser that is sold in India and expands BMW’s 1,170cc heritage range.
Interestingly, the R12 doesn’t look anything like its 1,800cc sibling and boasts its own visual identity. It is more compact, has a shorter wheelbase and weighs lesser. BMW has bestowed it with quintessential retro elements like a round headlamp, boxy fuel tank, and a bulbous rear fender. However, a host of optional accessories on offer means one can customise the bike to suit their taste. Choices of different wheels, seats, handlebars, and windscreens offer a tasteful palette of personalisation options.
Powering the R12 cruiser is BMW’s old 1,170cc, boxer-twin engine that used to be featured on the long-discontinued R1200GS. However, there’s a new airbox, revised cylinder head covers, and a neat-looking pair of single-sided exhausts on the R12. This is accompanied by a new two-piece tubular bridge steel space frame, more advanced electronics and better cycle parts than the original R nineT. On contrary to its old-school design, the front suspension is a modern adjustable setup while brakes have been sourced from Brembo. And in typical cruiser fashion, this new BMW rides on a 19-16-inch wheel combination.
In Europe, the new BMW R12 cruiser is pegged at £11,990 (approximately Rs.12.70 lakh). The details about its India arrival aren’t known yet.
