- BMW is working on a turbocharged 850cc engine
- Likely to debut in an adventure bike
- Project is in its early stages
BMW Motorrad is looking to go the turbocharged way, as some of the Japanese motorcycle brands have. According to a report, the German brand is developing a turbocharged parallel-twin engine.
Some of the details of this new parallel-twin turbocharged engine were revealed via leaked pictures of the official patent application. While there aren't many details on the exact displacement of this engine, it looks like BMW has used the engine that powers the current 850 line-ups. The patent drawings show a parallel-twin engine with a crankpin offset by 180 degrees and get a 180-degree/540-degree firing order. A balancer shaft likely to result in smoother engine performance has been added. The overall performance will go up with turbocharging, but the actual numbers will only be known at the global launch.
There's a high chance of this turbocharged engine making its way to more BMW bikes, like the F900 series. Such performance will excite riders who love to explore the bike's full potential on the road and a race track.
This new project is still in its early stages and will take a few years to become a reality. But there's a high of it coming to an adventure bike if the report is to be believed.
