- Third Brembo manuafcturing plant in the country
- To become operational in October
- Company aims to capitalise on increase in demand thanks to new norms
Brembo is in process of setting up a new motorcycle brakes manufacturing plant in Chennai. The Italian brand is aiming to capitalise on the government’s regulation which requires ABS and/or CBS to be offered as standard on motorcycles displacing more than 125cc.
According to the new norms, all two-wheelers above 125cc launched after 1 April 2018 need to feature ABS as standard. For two-wheelers below 125cc, the manufacturer has the option to offer either ABS or CBS. As for the models which are already on sale, the safety feature has to be offered before 1 April 2019. As such, Brembo is expecting a significant jump in orders for its ABS and CBS systems in the near future. Brembo has earmarked a EUR 90 lakhs (Rs 72.14 crore) investment for capacity expansion in 2018.
This year, Brembo is celebrating its tenth year of operation in India. The company also has a sub-brand in India, called ByBre (By Brembo). This brand supplies brake setups for mass market motorcycles and scooters. Brembo and ByBre cumulatively enjoy a 50 per cent market share in India. The new Brembo facility will be the third of its kind in India following the ones in Manesar and Chakan. It is expected to become operational in October 2018, in time to start supplying kits to motorcycle manufacturers.
