A 1929 Brough Superior motorcycle was recently auctioned off for a record breaking GBP 3,15,100 (Rs 3.05 crore), making it the most expensive motorcycle to be ever sold. Dubbed as the ‘original superbike’, the Brough Superior SS100 Alpine Grand Sports is one of the most sought-after motorcycles by motorcycling aficionados, and was auctioned at Bonham’s Bond Street Sale in the UK.
The SS100 Alpine Grand Sports in question broke the record of GBP 2,91,200 (Rs 2.82 crore), which was set by another one of Brough Superior models, the 1922 SS80, in 2012. Back in 1929, the SS100 was clocked at over 160kmph at the Brooklands racetrack, making it a part of an elite club of automobiles which could breach the 100mph barrier. The SS100 also undertook a gruelling Alpine Trial endurance challenge in Austria, Croatia and Slovenia, winning six trophies in the process and leading to the conception of the SS100 Alpine Grand Sports.
Last month, Brough Superior unveiled the modern iteration of the SS100 at the 2014 EICMA Show. Powered by an 88 degree V-twin engine, the SS100 will be available in three versions – SS100 Traditional, SS100 Titanium and SS100 Black. With a launch expected in the second half of 2015, prices will start at EUR 49,900 (Rs 38.10 lakh).
