- Chandigarh to stop petrol bike, scooter registration
- Won't register vehicles from July
- Current fiscal target has almost been met
The Chandigarh administration has decided to stop registering all two-wheelers powered by internal combustion engines (ICE).
According to the official statement released by the UT administration, registering such vehicles won't be possible from July onwards. The registration target for the current financial year stands at 6,202 units, and as of now, 4,032 two-wheelers have already been bought and registered by the people of Chandigarh. So, it has been decided to prepone the deadline as only 2,170 vehicles are left to be registered in the UT.
This policy is likely to hurt the ICE manufacturers. However, most of them already have their electric scooters on the market. So, it won't make that big difference. But the new stance by the Chandigarh administration could motivate a few more UTs or state governments, and if that happens, the overall sales of two-wheelers could come down. Chandigarh is a small region for the general two-wheeler population, but many EV brands will benefit from this policy.
