Do It Yourself: Transfer A Pre-Owned Bike’s Ownership Online

To a lot of us, pre-owned is the way to go when it comes to bringing home a two-wheeler. The decision to opt for a pre-owned vehicle over a brand-new one can be attributed to a number of reasons, all quite subjective, but it can safely be said that buying a pre-owned vehicle - of the right kind - is a smart choice indeed.

The rush of browsing through hundreds of listings, asking your social circle to lend a hand through their many WhatsApp groups and, of course, that one friend who tries to convince you otherwise - the process of finding your pre-owned two-wheeler is no less than a thrilling (if exhausting) ride itself. However, buying your preferred vehicle is not where the journey ends - there’s a little further you have to go, to ensure a seamless ownership experience and, of course, legal compliance - transfer of ownership.

A mandatory procedure applicable to all pre-owned vehicles in India, transfer of ownership is an important step in securing your vehicle while also ensuring the authorities establish the right identification for your prized possession. In most Indian states, vehicle ownership transfer can be done online, and while there may be minor differences in the way the digital process is structured across states, it can still entirely be done by yourself! *

Here’s a quick guide to how you can transfer ownership of your pre-owned vehicle all by yourself, in 7 simple steps:

1. Visit Parivahan website and create account

2. Click on ‘Online Services’

3. Click on ‘Vehicle Related Services’

4. Choose your state

5. Enter vehicle details (registration number and chassis number)

6. Click on ‘application’ and enter the required information

7. Payment * Standard T&C Apply

Please also note the list of required documents to initiate the digital Transfer of Ownership transaction, and remember that you will need an Aadhar account and a valid mobile phone number, for OTP-based verification purposes. Also ensure that you renew your bike insurance policy and PUC certificate before document submission. *

1. Form 28

2. Form 29

3. Form 30

4. Form 31

5. Form 35

6. Vehicle Registration Certificate

7. Bike Insurance Policy

8. Pollution Certificate

9. Proof of Address

As a safeguard against potential digital discrepancies, do ensure you save a copy of your transaction receipt. Lastly, depending on the state you reside in, the RTO may dispatch your new registration card to your address or notify you to collect the same at the RTO, within a few days of your application being processed. Sounds simple enough, right? Go on, bring home that dream motorcycle you’ve been hunting down, then! *

* Standard T&C Apply
