- New testing criteria for EV
- Will test batteries, BMS
- Will apply from April 1, 2023
The government of India has rolled out a new set of testing criteria for electric two-wheelers through its heavy ministries department.
All electric two-wheeler companies have to make sure that their products, batteries and systems associated pass these new requirements. These vehicles need to be produced under the production-linked incentive (PLI) and also under FAME.
As per the notification released by the heavy industries, a total of six new tests will be done at the cell level. These include altitude simulation and temperature cycling. Under the temperature cycling test, the reaction of the lithium-ion cell is observed after the chamber temperature is raised and is kept at a high temperature. On the other hand, altitude simulation will see that the batteries do not explode or catch fire when stored at a specified absolute pressure and temperature.
At the battery pack level, there will be a total of five tests. But the battery management system, which was responsible for a lot of EV fires in the past, will go through 11 new tests. These new tests also include dropping or a free fall of battery packs to observe that the lithium-ion batteries do not explode or catch fire. These new rules will come into effect from April 1, 2023
