Hero to launch one-make Splendor racing series

Hero Motor Corp will soon launch a one-make racing series and will base it on the Splendor NXG. The first season is expected to take place from July to December and will comprise six races divided between the Buddh International Circuit and the Irungattukottai race track outside Chennai.

The racing spec Splendor NXG will make use of a re-bored 107cc engine that will now produce 8.1bhp and 8.5Nm of torque as compared to the standard motorcycle’s 7.6bhp and 8Nm of torque. It appears that in a bid to keep costs down the bikes will continue to make use of the 4-Speed sequential gear box, however, they will add a disc brake in front as a safety measure.

In terms of overall design the bike will retain all of its body panels but is also expected to the rear seat cowl from the Splendor Classic concept vehicle that was shown at the 2014 Auto Expo. We have no word on the number of participants or the entry fee but believe that it will be around Rs 50,000 to race for the whole season. The series will also comprise theory classes where the participants will be taught the basics of wheel-to-wheel racing and rising techniques.

Our sources reveal that the Gurgaon-based two-wheeler major is believed to have taken the decision to start the series in a bid to cash in on the growing interest for motorsports in India. Another reason is believed to be so that they can provide an avenue for youth to learn safe riding in an easy and fun manner.

Disclaimer: Sounds exciting doesn’t it? A cheap racing series with easy to ride motorcycles at exotic locations. If you have guessed by now it is April fools days and we have been playing you right from the first word of this story.
