Honda and HPCL join hands to set up battery swapping stations in India

- Will commence operations in Bengaluru

- Will be available for three-wheelers in the initial phase

- Service to be expanded to other cities in the future

Honda Power Pack Energy India, a new subsidiary of the Honda Motor Company Ltd, has signed a memorandum of understanding and commercial agreement with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). Through this collaboration, the two brands will provide battery sharing services in HPCL’s retail outlets in major cities across India. Previously, HPCL had signed a similar agreement with Hero MotoCorp.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Japan had announced its plan to begin battery sharing service in India starting with electric three-wheelers through Honda Power Pack Energy India. Through this partnership, Honda’s battery sharing service will allow rickshaw drivers to stop by at the nearest battery swapping stations being setup across the selected cities, and swap discharged batteries.

This service will commence on a commercial basis from Bengaluru in the first half of 2022. Honda plans to set up a strong network of battery swap stations at strategic locations like HPCL’s retail outlets. The service will be expanded to other major cities in a phased manner. The company said in its press announcement that while this service will focus on the three-wheeler segment in the initial phase, it would eventually expand to two-wheelers as well. Honda is currently developing its ties with multiple OEMs for various applications.

In other updates, Honda 2Wheelers India is working on a new electric two-wheeler for our market. You can read more about it here.
