- Honda reaches a global cumulative production milestone of 400 million units
- Celebrates 70th anniversary of its inception
- India is currently the largest market for Honda
Honda has completed 70 years since its inception today and the occasion was marked by the brand reaching the milestone of 400 million units in cumulative global two-wheeler production.
The company, Honda Motor Co. Ltd., was founded in 1948 and its first two-wheeler model, the Dream D-type, was introduced in the following year. Around 11 years later, the Japanese brand rolled out the Super Cub and the Super Cub C100 both of which went on to become a massive success. The Super Cub brand name was later shared by various models, with displacements ranging from 49cc to 124cc.
In the following years, Honda expanded its reach to various countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Brazil where it also set up its production facilities. It was in 2001 that the brand begun manufacturing two-wheelers in India, with the first model being the Activa. A favourable response from the India buyers majorly contributed to the company’s achievement of reaching the 200 million units milestone of cumulative global two-wheeler production in 2008.
Currently, India is the largest market for Honda. Notably, 28.2 per cent of the 20.82 million units manufactured in the fiscal year 2019 were produced in India, which is the highest among all the countries Honda has presence in.
