Crashes can be heart-breaking, and bone-breaking in some cases. Encountering a motorcycle accident crushes many people’s confidence to get back on two wheels. In some cases, people even suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and such conditions require expert supervision. However, there’s more to regaining confidence after an accident than visiting an orthopedist or a psychiatrist.
In the ninth episode of The BikeWale Podcast, Anuj and Suvil talk about accidents, different challenges people face after getting into one and some effective ways to overcome them. The Spotify link to the podcast has been given below:
Getting Back To Riding After A Crash | Episode 9 | The BikeWale Podcast
Physical and Mental issues
While physical injuries are common, in some crashes people even face difficulty in dealing with the situation mentally. Lack of confidence to ride again, fear of passing the same route where the incident took place, or getting flashbacks of the crash repeatedly are some of the widely seen conditions. In a worst-case scenario, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is also experienced by the rider. These situations need to be handled sensibly and that’s what Anuj and Suvil touch upon in this episode.
Analysing the crash
Besides dealing with physiological issues, it’s also important to thoroughly analyse the crash in order to avoid it the next time. The most important aspect here is to think about your actions right before the crash. Could you have done something differently to avoid it? It’s advisable to hone your riding skills and learn more about the basic physics related to riding bikes. Also, carrying out check-ups in your bike and riding gear is also crucial.
Dealing with your closed ones
It’s quite normal for your close ones to be sceptical about you riding again. Pressure from your family and friends (mostly non-riders) to stop riding motorcycles is inevitable. However, it’s important to handle such situations sensibly and calmly, understanding their concern for your well-being. However, you must assure them and ensure yourself that you will try to be more responsible and safer henceforth. Explaining the significance of riding schools and enrolling for one could also prove reassuring.
