Hyderabad traffic police book 10,000 non-helmeted motorists daily

A survey by the Hyderabad police on implementation of two-wheeler riders wearing helmets in the city following a 25-day crackdown revealed that less than 50 per cent follow the rules in the South Zone of Hyderabad.

Since March 1, Hyderabad traffic police has booked 1.3 lakh riders and collected huge fines. Earlier, the traffic police used to book 6,000 cases for not wearing helmets but over the past two weeks, they have registered 10,000 cases against motorists every day.

"Since there is a need to improve the implementation of wearing helmets in south and east zone, we are increasing the enforcement team from existing eight to 20 teams. The sample survey was done to know the status of compliance using the policemen on the field,'' Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) AV Ranganath told TOI.

The traffic police has started a process of taking photographs of riders without helmets and send e-challans to their houses. Besides the e-challans, the local traffic police are also catching riders if pending challans are found against their name for various offences. "The vehicles are being immediately seized and the we are releasing it only after the dues are cleared," said a senior official.
