- Launch likely in the second half of 2023
- Showcased to dealers in India
Yamaha Motor India has showcased multiple models to its dealers in the country and among the list was the company’s middleweight motorcycle, the YZF-R7. In fact, several dealers of the Japanese manufacturer have commenced bookings for this motorcycle, although unofficially. While the company is yet to announce a launch date for the YZF-R7, here we explain everything that we know about this motorcycle ahead of its arrival in India.
What styling cues will the India-bound Yamaha YZF-R7 feature?
The styling of the India-bound Yamaha YZF-R7 will be similar to its international-spec model. Thus, the upcoming YZF-R7 will feature a single-pod headlight with twin LED DRLs, a YZR-M1 MotoGP bike-style M-shaped air intake, a full-fairing, a clip-on style handlebar, rear-set footpegs, split-style seats, and a compact exhaust. Other styling elements include fairing-mounted rear-view mirrors, a muscular (13-litre) fuel tank with a YZF-R1-style fin design, and a YZF-R1-inspired taillight. Internationally, Yamaha offers the YZF-R7 in two colours – Icon Blue and Yamaha Black. We expect both colours to arrive in the Indian market.
Will the India-bound Yamaha YZF-R7 carry the same specifications as the international model?
Similar to the international-spec model, the India-bound Yamaha YZF-R7, too, will use a 689cc, parallel twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled CP2 engine that also powers the MT-07. The motor features a 270-degree crankshaft that gives an uneven firing sequence. Linked to a six-speed gearbox, this motor is tuned to deliver 72.4bhp at 8,750rpm and 67Nm at 6,500rpm. The gearbox benefits from an assist and a slipper clutch as standard, while a Quick Shift System is available as an optional extra.
What features will the India-bound Yamaha YZF-R7 use?
The feature list on the international model comprises full-LED lighting, a negative mode display LCD instrument cluster, an optional Quick Shift System, and ABS. Notably, the international model does not get a Bluetooth module, and the India-bound model is likely to miss the connectivity feature as well.
Will the India-bound Yamaha YZF-R7 get the same hardware as the international model?
The hardware on the India-bound model is not likely to change, and thus we expect the upcoming YZF-R7 to use a diamond-type frame. The suspension setup, similar to the international version, should include fully-adjustable, KYB-sourced upside-down front forks and a preload and rebound damping adjustable mono-shock at the back. The braking tasks will most likely be handled by twin radially-mounted 298mm discs at the front and a single 245mm rotor at the back.
What will be the price of the 2023 YZF-R7 in India?
The Yamaha YZF-R7 will rival the likes of the Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the Honda CBR650R in the Indian market. The inline, four-cylinder-powered Honda motorcycle carries a premium price tag, and we expect it to be priced closer to the Kawasaki Ninja 650. Thus, the India-bound Yamaha YZF-R7 could arrive between the Rs. 7 lakh and Rs. 8 lakh (ex-showroom, India) price bracket. As reported earlier, several dealers have commenced unofficial bookings for the YZF-R7, and this motorcycle is expected to arrive in India in the second half of 2023.
