KTM’s upcoming 1290 Super Duke-based touring motorcycle, expected to be christened 1290 SM-T, has been photographed in Italy. By the looks of it, the prototype seems to be in its final development stages, which means that it won’t be long before the motorcycle hits the production lines.
The KTM 1290 SM-T employs the same chrome-molybdenum steel tubular space frame, though the rear section will be strengthened to increase the payload capacity. The travel and setup of the WP Suspension units will be revised to suit the motorcycle’s character. The seats have also been redesigned to make it comfortable during long hauls, while taller handlebars and revised footpegs offer a relaxed seating position.
Powering the KTM 1290 SM-T would be the same 1301cc V-twin engine from its naked sibling. This engine delivers 180bhp and 143Nm of torque through a six-speed gearbox, though we can expect it to be detuned for the 1290 SM-T.
The KTM 1290 SM-T will rival other litre-class adventure-touring motorcycles like the Triumph Tiger Explorer, Aprilia Caponard 1200 and the BMW S1000XR. We can expect it to debut at 2015 EICMA Show in Milan, in November.
