•Makes more power than the standard model
•Features upgraded hardware
•Gets KTM’s newly debuted TFT screen
KTM has unveiled the 990 Duke R in the international market. While it is based on the standard 990 Duke, the R trim packs more electronics, different hardware, and an overall superior package. Here is what it gets.
The KTM 990 Duke R has similar bodywork to the base trim and features a centrally mounted projector LED light flanked by a pair of boomerang-shaped LED turn indicators. It also has an angular and sharp fuel tank with extensions, a split seat, and a rear cowl.
KTM has equipped the 990 Duke R with the same 947cc twin-cylinder liquid-cooled engine but it makes a staggering 130bhp and 103Nm. That’s 7bhp more than the 990 Duke. The motor is linked to a six-speed gearbox and benefits from a quickshifter. It tips the scale at 179kg.
Taming the said 130 horses is a list of electronic rider aids. It includes ride modes—rain, street, sport, and custom/track—launch control, traction control, ABS modes, and more. All the parameters can be tweaked using the switch cubes and the newly introduced horizontal 8.8-inch TFT. The unit also supports smartphone connectivity using the KTM application.
Another difference on the 990 Duke R is its hardware. The list includes fully adjustable WP front forks and monoshock accompanied by twin 300mm front and a single 240mm rear disc. These are mounted on 17-inch wheels wrapped in 120/70 front and 180/55 rear Michelin Power Cup 2 tyres.
KTM has unveiled the 990 Duke R overseas. However, we doubt it will make it to the Indian shores. But the odds of the standard 990 Duke being launched here are higher.
