- Spotted testing in Europe
- Will feature a new 990cc twin-cylinder engine
- Could be launched in early 2025
The KTM 990 SMT has been spotted testing in Europe. The test bike appears to be inching closer to the production form and could be launched in early 2025. Here is what we know about it.
The KTM 990 SMT is based on the Austrian brand’s new 990 platform which will comprise the 990 Duke as well as the 990 RC R, the latter too was spotted on a test run. Speaking of the 990 SMT, it gets a supermoto setup in terms of the overall build and hardware. However, this is a revival of the 990 SMT of yesteryear and it seems to get a very contemporary styling. As seen in these spy shots, the 990 SMT test bike gets a centre-set projector LED headlight flanked by two small LED DRLs on both sides. It is topped by a decently tall visor and gets single piece setup, a split grab rail, and a wide tubular handlebar.
KTM is likely to power the 990 SMT by the same engine as its upcoming supersports. It is a 947cc, parallel-twin, LC8c engine and makes 128bhp and a peak torque of 103Nm for the RC R. But we think it could be detuned for the SMT as per its use-case.
The hardware for the KTM 990 SMT comprises WP USD front forks and a monoshock, both adjustable. Its braking hardware includes dual front and a single rear disc with dual-channel ABS. These appear to be mounted on 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in road-biased tyres. We expect KTM to pack a decent list of electronics and offer features like ride modes, traction control, switchable ABS, a TFT with smartphone connectivity as well.
While KTM is currently working on bringing the updated range to India, we don’t expect the 990 SMT to land here since the supermoto segment still isn’t popular here.
