- Could be a completely new engine compared to the current 890 motor
- To be used for the new 990 range
- Likely to be borrowed by CFMoto as well
Back in 2022, the KTM RC 990 was spotted testing overseas. Now, new details and design registrations of the 990 motor have been leaked online. Let’s take a look at it.
The new 990 motor looks visually similar to the current 890cc unit. But the majority of changes have been made to the internals. The images reveal a revamped cylinder head, new cylinders, new cases, and a new sump as well. The new motor shares the mounts as the 890cc unit, allowing KTM to use the same chassis if needed.
Even the engine mount bolt hole on the 990 seems to be placed a few millimeters higher compared to the 890cc. So, there’s a probability of an increase in the stroke value. That said, the oil sump has been shifted to the right side, clearing more space for an underbelly setup. Even the exhaust ports seem larger than the older ones. KTM will likely manufacture these engines in China and CFMoto could borrow the same for its future models.
It’ll be a while before the KTM 990 Duke, RC 990 and Adventure 990 make their official debut. As of now, the Austrian bikemaker has unveiled the latest 790 Adventure and more in the international market.
