It’s been a while since we rode the Mahindra Gusto 125 in Pune. And during the media ride, it was told that the new 125cc scooter will be launched closer to the 2016 Auto Expo, but it wasn’t.
Now the company is gearing up to launch the Gusto 125 in a phased manner. Starting mid-March, Mahindra Two Wheelers will launch the Gusto 125 in South India first, followed by the western regions and the northern states. The company is taking this launch approach to gain maximum visibility in certain markets, especially the fast growing southern markets.
The overall design language resembles the Gusto 110, however, Mahindra has made use of attractive paint schemes to differentiate the 125cc model with the younger sibling. Powering the Mahindra Gusto 125 is a 125cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine, which is based on the powertrain used in the Rodeo and the Uzo. Mahindra has however retuned the engine to increase the output to 8.6bhp and 10Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a CVT transmission.
We’re expecting Mahindra to price the Gusto 125 on par with the rivals, if not undercut it. But it’ll be interesting to see how this new 125cc scooter performs in the segment where we’ve the Honda Activa 125 and there’s a new Suzuki Access 125 on its way too.
