Mahindra Two Wheelers is developing an electric version of the Gusto, tweeted Anand Mahindra, the company’s CEO .
An early prototype was also spotted in the image that was tweeted by the top honcho. In order to keep the development costs in check, the company is using the Gusto platform to build this new electric scooter. Although Mahindra withdrew from the mass market two-wheeler business a few months ago, it now plans to make a big difference in the electric vehicle segment.
Its car division, Mahindra Electric, has been the forerunner in the EV business for the last few years with its product, the E2O. However, due to high battery costs and low driving range, the product hasn’t been able to get the numbers Mahindra has been aiming for. But now, with the government determined to weed out vehicles running on fossil fuels by 2030, there has been a sudden surge of new EV products planned for the country. And it looks like the Mahindra Gusto electric is one of them.
Mahindra’s rivals Bajaj and TVS have been planning to get into EV business as well. In fact, rumours have it that TVS will be unveiling the production ready electric scooter early next year. And if that happens, we can positively say that the two-wheeler electric revolution has begun.
