The Mahindra Gusto has been launched in the Indian market at an introductory price of Rs 43,000 (ex-showroom Delhi). The Gusto marks the Pune-based manufacturer’s foray into the lucrative 110cc scooter segment and will be positioned against other formidable scooters like the TVS Jupiter, Hero Maestro and the country’s most popular scooter, the Honda Activa. It will be available in two versions, of which the top-end Gusto VX has been priced at Rs 47,000 (ex-showroom Delhi).
The Gusto gets pseudo air vents and a faux aluminium panel with the company’s logo and clear lens indicators in the front apron. The headlamp is positioned conventionally on the handlebar. The instrument cluster gets an analogue speedometer and fuel gauge with a silver housing. The rear gets a long single-piece grab rail and a big tail lamp assembly, which integrates the stop light, reflectors, the clear lens indicators as well as the company’s logo. The Gusto will borrow a few parts from other Mahindra scooters, which will help the company keep costs in check.
The Gusto will be powered by a new 109cc all aluminium M-TEC engine which will incorporate a high energy HT (ignition) coil and a series regulator. The air-cooled single-cylinder engine churns out 8bhp and 9Nm of torque, which makes it the most powerful scooter in the segment.
The Gusto will be produced at Mahindra’s facility in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, which will also cater to the company’s other global markets. Over few months, Mahindra is also planning to launch the Gusto in its other global markets in South Asia, Central America and Africa.
Until now, Mahindra only had the 80cc and 125cc scooters in its portfolio. The 110cc scooter segment in India is growing by leaps and bounds and the Gusto will be a very important model for the company. The Gusto is a global model which will shoulder the responsibility of driving up the company’s volumes and market share in the world’s biggest two-wheeler market.
