Mahindra Mojo UT300 vs Bajaj Dominar 400 vs Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350X: Competition Check

Mahindra has launched the Mojo UT300, a new entry-level model in the Mojo range. The bike goes head-on against the Bajaj Dominar 400 and the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350X. We find out how the bikes stack up against each other on paper.

Design and features

The Mahindra Mojo UT300 (UT stands for Universal Tourer) sports features to make it more affordable while retaining the essence of the Mojo XT300. It gets a single exhaust and uses MRF Zapper tyres in place of the Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tyres. It even does away with the LED DRLs and the trademark ‘golden ribs’. The instrument cluster retains the analogue tachometer along with a digital display.

The Bajaj Dominar 400 has been positioned as a power cruiser and sports a muscular stance. It gets a sculpted fuel tank and a full-LED headlamp and tail lamp to boost its appeal. The bike gets twin digital instrument clusters; one above the handlebar and the other on the tank.

The Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350X is based on the standard Thunderbird. However, it sports flashy colours, blacked-out components, a shorter handlebar and grabrails that have been inspired by custom bikes. It also gets 9-spoke alloys and tubeless tyres; a first for Royal Enfield. The instrument cluster on the Thunderbird 350X is a twin-pod unit with analogue dials and a digital display.

Cycle parts

All three bikes ride on conventional telescopic front forks. While the Mojo and the Dominar get a rear monoshock, the Thunderbird 350X uses a dual-shock setup.

Braking power on the Mojo is taken care of by a 320mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc. The brake setup on the Thunderbird 350X consists of a 280mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc.

The Dominar 400 also gets a 320mm front disc similar to the Mojo UT300, while its rear wheel uses a 230mm disc. It is the only motorcycle in this list to offer ABS as an option.

The Mojo UT300 gets the largest fuel-tank with a capacity of 21-litres. The Thunderbird 350X comes in second with a 20-litre fuel-tank. The Dominar 400 gets the smallest fuel tank with a 13-litre capacity.

Engine

Powering the Mojo UT300 is the same 295cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, although the fuel-injection system has made way for a carburettor. This unit delivers 27bhp and 30Nm of torque through a six-speed transmission. The bike also gets a limp home mode which restricts the engine to 5000rpm in case of an engine malfunction.

The Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350X uses a 346cc single-cylinder cylinder, air-cooled engine that delivers 19.8bhp and 28Nm of torque via a five-speed gearbox. The Dominar 400 is the most powerful bike of the lot. It uses a 373cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine that produces 34.5bhp and 35Nm of torque. This unit is mated to a six-speed transmission with a slipper clutch.

Pricing

The Mahindra Mojo UT300 is priced at Rs 1.49 lakhs, although those who book the motorcycle before 31st March get a flat Rs 10,000 discount on the sticker price. Pricing for the Dominar 400 starts at Rs 1.44 lakhs for the standard version and goes up to Rs 1.58 lakhs for the ABS variant. The Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350X will set you back by Rs 1.56 lakhs. All prices are ex-showroom.
