Mahindra Racing has announced that 2017 will be their last season in motorcycle grand prix racing. The separation from Moto3 will enable the team to shift its focus towards electric racing. A few days ago, Mahindra had also secured its first win in the Formula E. Mahindra Racing’s exit by the end of this year will leave only Honda and KTM as Moto3 manufacturers.
Mahindra Racing joined the 125cc MotoGP class back in 2011 and first performed impressively in 2016 with three wins to its credit. However, this year has not been good for the team with three outfits failing to score points in four out of seven races. Speaking about the exit, Mahindra Group's President of Group Communications and Ethics, and CEO,RuzbehIrani said, "Our strategic review of Mahindra Racing and Mahindra's two-wheeler businesses led us to the decision to withdraw from MotoGP. It has been a tremendous journey, and we would like to thank all of our staff, partners and collaborators who have contributed to our success during our seven years in the sport."
Mahindra Racing’s exit in India this year will affect growth for aspiring racing individuals in India. However, reports indicate that Mahindra Racing is contemplating entry in the Dakar rally, which might help Indian rally riders gain recognition.
