Mahindra Two Wheelers confirmed that the Mahindra-Peugeot association will be complete by next month and there will be no Mahindra branding on the Peugeot products. The collaboration will still enable Peugeot to function independently in India.
Last year, Mahindra Group announced their plans of joining hands with Peugeot by holding a 51 per cent stake in the company. The French manufacturer is one of the oldest scooter brands from France and has products that cater to the premium segment of scooters globally. The vehicles will also be positioned in the same segment in India while Mahindra will concentrate on the mass segment.
Viren Popli, chief of operations, Mahindra Two Wheelers, said, "I don’t think we are going to create a Mahindra product that looks like Peugeot. We will let Peugeot be a Peugeot and Mahindra be a Mahindra. Both will be different in positioning and Peugeot will be an independent brand."
The Mahindra-Peugeot deal is in progress and the company has made a total investment of 28 million euros, which is around Rs 216 crore, to the new joint venture. The company says there is some anti-trust documentation to be finished and will be completed by the end of this month or at the start of February.
With the launch of new products, Mahindra Two Wheelers have revamped their image in India and are eventually ramping up their presence globally as well. The company exported the Centuro to various overseas markets including East Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and part of Middle East. The manufacturer put the newly launched Gusto scooter in Nepal and Bangladesh. Now they intend to make it available in South Asia, Latin America and Africa as well. Mahindra does not intend to go beyond the 300cc segment of motorcycles and will soon launch the 300cc Mojo motorcycle for the Indian market.
