Motorcycle buyers in Bangalore will now have to prove that they own two ISI-certified helmets. The buyers will have to produce receipts for two helmets purchased at the time of registration of their new motorcycles.
"In fact, the Motor Vehicles Act says vehicle dealers have to provide helmets while selling the vehicle. The helmet rule, however, was in force only in Bengaluru. Now that the rule is in place all over the state for both rider and pillion, asking vehicle dealers to provide helmets may mean owners being fleeced. That's why we want to ask owners to show they own helmets while getting their two-wheelers registered," Transport Commissioner, Rame Gowda said.
HG Tambad, Regional Transport Officer at Davangere, said many vehicle owners produce old helmets at the time of registration. “We are accepting them as long as they are ISI-certified," he added.
It seems, the helmet's barcode will be displayed along with the vehicle-owner's details in the registration documents. "We are working on all these options to make sure that it is not misused," he said. The Supreme Court had made helmets mandatory for pillion riders in January.
