MV Agusta has announced that it will revive its Cagiva sub-brand with an electric platform.
Cagiva's earlier motorcycles were petrol-powered V-twins, and the electric models will be a first for the brand. It will outsource the electric powertrains, technology and hardware as the brand currently does not have internal capabilities for development. The manufacturer is expected to unveil a prototype at the 2018 EICMA with production beginning in 2019. Unlike MV Agusta, the Cagiva motorcycles will be mass produced.
Cagiva was founded in Italy in the year 1950 and has won a number of races in motorsport events like the Dakar rally and Moto GP. Owned by Harley-Davidson for a brief period of two years, the brand was bought back by MV Agusta in 2010. However, Cagiva shut shop around 2012 with emission norms getting stringent and the focus of resources shifting to the MV Agusta F3.
Meanwhile, the brand is unlikely to make an entry into the Indian market anytime in the near future.
