- Leaked patent shows BMW’s new touring motorcycle
- Will be based on the new 1,800cc platform
- Largest engine developed by BMW till date
A new patent revealing BMW’s upcoming touring motorcycle has been leaked online. The pictures clearly reveal that it will be based on the brand’s new 1800cc platform which will also be utilised for the highly talked-about R18 cruiser. After revealing the R18 in prototype form in 2018, the company had shown the second version of the concept at the EICMA 2019.
Now, we already know that this new platform from BMW will spawn multiple models which have been spied on several occasions until now. One of these bikes, which flaunts a typical tourer styling, can be seen in the new set of patent images. It boasts of a long and low-slung profile featuring touring-oriented elements such as a large front fairing with a tall windscreen, pulled-back handlebar, front-set footpegs and capacious-looking side panniers.
The patent images also depict a large infotainment system flanked by speakers with analogue dials on top. This setup looks similar to that on the touring models from Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle. Besides that, BMW will most likely equip the bike with a plenty of electronic aids such as cruise control and traction control. Moreover, the company might also introduce handful of accessories too for this motorcycle.
As for the heart of the matter, BMW had officially revealed comprehensive details about this mammoth 1,800cc air/oil-cooled motor in November last year. With a 107mm bore and 100mm stroke, it produces 91bhp at 4,750rpm and 158Nm at 3,000rpm. This engine is mainly focused on delivering punchy torque in the lower revs, between 2,000-4,000rpm to be precise.
Details about the launch of the production model of these 1,800cc BMW motorcycles are scarce at the moment. We expect BMW to have something interesting in store at this year’s EICMA show in Milan.
