- New name trademarked in Germany
- Likely to be used for a neo-retro offering
- Could be announced in 2023
Back in May 2022, BMW Motorrad trademarked the R12. And the rumor was that the Bavarian brand could be working on a new smaller cruiser for the said name. But now the scenario is slowly changing as BMW has filed another trademark for the R12 S name in Germany. What could it unfold to? Let’s have a look.
Historically, BMW has used the S at the end of its sporty offerings like the R 90 S, R 100 S, K 75 S, and the K 1200 S. Most of the aforementioned bikes adorned either full or side fairings. This makes us believe that the R12 S could follow suit. This means even the R12 won’t be a cruiser. Both models could be successors to the existing R NineT range which was introduced in 2013 for the brand’s 90th anniversary.
And since 2023 marks BMW’s 100th anniversary, it makes sense for the company to introduce a new bike. This would expand the bike maker’s portfolio and add more sentimental value to its existence. Now, BMW could work around a name like R100 for the 100th anniversary, but the R12 would better help differentiate the R NineT and the upcoming R1300 lineup.
Apart from the above-mentioned speculations, the R12/R12 S details are unavailable at the moment. So its application and other information could be revealed only by next year.
