New Yamaha YZF-R7: Details explained

Yamaha has revealed its new YZF-R7 for the international markets. The middleweight, supersport model is based on the MT-07 naked roadster. While the India launch details are unavailable, here we explain the new Yamaha YZF-R7 in detail.

Engine

The new YZF-R7 shares its 689cc, parallel twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled CP2 engine with the MT-07. The motor features a 270-degree crankshaft that gives an uneven firing sequence. Similar to the naked roadster, the engine on the YZF-R7 is tuned to produce 72.4bhp at 8,750rpm and 67Nm of peak torque at 6,500rpm. The six-speed gearbox features an assist and a slipper clutch as standard while a Quick Shift System is available as an optional extra.

Design

The new Yamaha YZF-R7 features a full-fairing design along with a clip-on style handlebar, rear-set footpegs, and split-style seats. The motorcycle is built around a tubular frame with an aluminium centre brace. The front fascia gets a centrally-mounted LED headlight with twin LED DRLs, and a YZR-M1 MotoGP bike style M-shaped air intake. Other features include fairing-mounted rear-view mirrors, a negative mode display LCD instrument cluster, a muscular (13-litre) fuel tank with YZF-R1-style fin design, and a compact exhaust canister. The tail design resembles the styling of the YZF-R1.

Features

The motorcycle features full-LED lighting as standard. The LCD screen, apart from the regular ride-related data, features a gear indicator, a shift indicator light, and a Quick Shift System indicator. The optional Quick Shift System can be used for clutchless upshifts.

Colours

Yamaha has introduce the new YZF-R7 in two colours for the international markets – Icon Blue and Yamaha Black. The graphics are minimal, and the motorcycle features a R7 decal on the fairing and a Yamaha logo on the fuel tank.

Hardware

The suspension setup on the new YZF-R7 include fully-adjustable, KYB-sourced upside-down front forks and a preload and rebound damping adjustable mono-shock at the back. The braking power comes from twin radially-mounted 298mm discs at the front and a single 245mm rotor at the back. The 17-inch alloy wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport tyres.
