Niti Aayog to introduce EV battery swap policy soon

- Niti Aayog to roll out battery swap policy - Will be introduced in next three-four months - Expected to reduce the overall ownership cost

Niti Aayog – a public policy think tank of the Government of India is planning to introduce the new battery swapping policy.  This new policy is expected to be rolled out in the next three-four months.

This proposed policy is speculated to come with a business model that will make two-wheeler electric scooters more affordable to own. They are planning to come out with leasing and battery as a service model that will bring down the overall cost of an EV.

Currently, two-wheeler EV owners have to purchase the EV with a battery, except Bounce E1, which has an option to lease a battery.  Furthermore, at present, the battery takes up almost 50 per cent of the total vehicle cost. So this policy is bound to make the upfront cost lower than it currently is. However, the exact quantum of reduction will only be known once the policy comes out.
