Number of motorcycles in Mumbai go up 64 per cent in 6 years

Mumbai has seen a growth of 64 per cent growth in the number the motorcycles trotting around the city. This has led to the bike density in the city of seven islands to cross 800 units per kilometre. Even though this is good news for the manufacturers and dealers, the traffic situation in the city is only bound to get worse.

Transport department sources said that nearly 4,000 two-wheelers were purchased in the past fortnight by Mumbaikars. However, the roads in the city are not getting any wider.

One of the reasons for people going for bikes was the fact that there was no reduction in fares for BEST buses for short distance routes. The minimum bus fare was fixed at Rs 8 and recently, the BEST has decided not to reduce fares for short distances up to six kilometres.

In the past two years, statistics reveal that the population of two-wheelers in Mumbai has gone up significantly. Nearly three lakh bikes and scooters were registered at the city RTOS - Tardeo (Central RTO), Andheri and Borivali (Western RTOs) and Wadala (Eastern RTO) during this period.

Affordability and paying schemes on bikes is another big reason for these sales figures.
