Piaggio, KTM, Honda, Yamaha join hands for swappable battery technology

- Piaggio, KTM, Honda, and Yamaha form a consortium for swappable batteries

- To define the standardised technical specifications of swappable batteries

Piaggio, KTM, Honda and Yamaha have signed a letter of intent to set up a swappable battery consortium for electric vehicles including motorcycles, scooters, tricycles and quadricycles. The main objective of this consortium is to define the standardised technical specifications of the swappable battery system for the aforementioned types of EVs. The brands will execute this while working closely with interested stakeholders, national, European and international standardization bodies.

The execution of planned activities will begin in May 2021. At present, range anxiety and the lack of charging infrastructure are two of the main challenges in the adaption of electric mobility. The association of Piaggio, KTM, Honda and Yamaha will aim to address these hurdles by extending the battery range and shortening the charging time of batteries. They will also work towards lowering vehicle and infrastructure costs.

We believe the result of this consortium will result in the introduction of a common type of batteries suitable for different electric vehicles. This will be majorly helpful in setting up battery swapping stations where customers with EVs from different brands will be able to swap their drained battery with a charged one. With the improvement of charging infrastructure, an increasing number of brands will start developing electric two-wheelers with swappable battery facility.
