- Piaggio patents scooter with airbag
- MP3 350 will be the first scooter to get it
- Only Honda Goldwing comes with an airbag as of now
Piaggio is planning to equip its famous MP3 three-wheeled scooter with a car safety feature – airbags. The company and its airbag partner have filed a patent for this safety application.
Later last year, the Italian firm showcased an airbag prototype on the MP3 350 at the 2022 EICMA. It looks like this feature was well received, and that is why the company decided to go ahead and plan its future.
According to the patent application, there’s a wide airbag placed under the handlebar – near the knee section of the rider. This airbag is deployed through the plastic gaps – something that we see in cars too. There’s an inflator and a gas generator, and the airbag is deployed when activated. This broad and giant airbag comes right before the rider to absorb the energy from the accident. This system works only during a front crash.
Currently, Honda Goldwing is the only motorcycle on sale with airbags. With Piaggio entering the world of airbags, consumers will find it easier to accept such technology, even though it will come at a cost.
