- Piaggio Indian working on electric-scooter
- Will rival Ather 450X
- Launch in 2024
Piaggio India is planning to join the EV bandwagon. The company is currently in process of developing an electric-scooter that will be designed and developed for the Indian market.
According to a report, this upcoming e-scooter is already in development and will take up to two years to have the final product ready. The brand is a little late to the EV party as it wants to create a business case for its EVs even after the subsidies are removed. Currently, both the state and central governments provides subsidies of almost 40 per cent. As a result of this, the EV segment has grown considerably well in the last few months.
The top honcho of the company believes that while India has the manufacturing capabilities, the supplier eco-system isn’t ready to churn out good volumes. This could take a while to happen. The company is planning to get into high-speed performance EV segment and that means it would take on products like the Ather 450X.
There’s still no information whether the brand would develop an e-scooter from scratch and make something that is based on the Aprilia or Vespa scooters. We feel it would be the latter as it is extremely difficult to have an e-scooter ready from ground-up in just two years.
