Preview: Eider Leora

A couple of months ago, Eider Motors had set up shop in India to sell the Chinese motorcycle manufacturer CFMoto’s range in India. The line-up included six bikes and scooters ranging from 100cc to 650cc being sold from their Hyderabad dealership. Now, they have eight more Eider-badged bikes added to the line-up.

One of these Eider-badged scooters is the Leora. This scooter grabs all the attention at the closest Eider dealership we visited and we feel it could be their best seller once operations start. The Leora we had a close look at featured a dual-tone red and white colour combination, along with a matching seat cover and back rest.

There is no questioning what the designer was aiming at with this scooter, it is undoubtedly vintage and retro style. The front of the scooter, has a curvy but regular leg shield with neat tear-drop shaped turn signals. The beaky front mudguard appeared to be flimsy but comes with a chrome metal garnish up front which could even save slight brushing that could occur heavy traffic. The scooter also continues the dual tone stripe right through the front leg shield onto the front mudguard. The black stripes along the border of the leg shield are rather out of place.

What we liked is the 50s style handlebar and instrument cluster. Finished in aluminium the retro styled handlebar, speedometer and headlight cluster really complement each other. To top it off, it even has large rounded meters and metal finished switchgear – typical equipment of a scooter from over half a century ago.

Coming to the rear, even though it keeps the design flow going with the beaky rear end it was not to our liking. Even though the dual-tone colour scheme was smooth flowing along with the tear drop shaped turn signals, we found it a bit too quirky. The taillight unit however, is well finished and has a classic design with a neat LED light. The entire unit is made out of metal and felt like a high quality unit, it goes so far as to even out the not so neat rear end of the scooter.

The scooter is powered by a 124.6cc single cylinder, air-cooled engine paired to a CVT belt drive transmission. Fuel is fed through a carburettor and not fuel injection. In terms of power, the Leora develops 7.3bhp at 7500rpm. Suspension duties are handled by conventional front suspension but comes with a swing-arm with dual shocks at the rear. The scooter rides on 10 inch wheels front and rear with standard tubeless tyres.

The Leora has a six litre fuel tank capacity which should provide a decent range. However, the low top speed of only 80kmph from a scooter with a kerb weight of just 110kg and a 125cc engine comes as a surprise. Eider is set to launch the Leora in the festive season this year with a competitive price of around Rs 55,000.
