Two-wheeler dealerships in Rajasthan have called-off their strike. The state Transport Minister, Yoonus Khan’s assurance of revising the new rule requiring helmets to be offered to customers free of cost led to the end of this strike.
The one-day strike saw dealers suspend sales of two-wheelers as a mark of protest against the state transport department’s new regulation requiring dealerships to offer two ISI-marked helmets free of cost, to every buyer. The strike was called off after the transport minister intervened in the matter assuring that the word 'free' will be dropped from the order.
While Kerala also has a similar rule, the cost of helmets is borne by the two-wheeler manufacturers. The Rajasthan government might either implement a similar clause for its order, or decide to pass on the cost to the customers. While making helmets compulsory is surely a positive act, piling on an additional expense on the customers seems like a punitive move.
