Rajini Krishnan has finished fifth in the 2016 Malaysia superbike championship at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), Kuala Lumpur.
The last two rounds of the Malaysia superbike championship were hosted last weekend at the SIC. Rajini started from the sixth position on the grid for the Race 1. Despite being declared as a wet race, Rajini took the gamble of running on slicks taking into account the track condition. While he slipped into 13th position in the first half, his gamble paid off as the track began to dry up. He steadily climbed up the rankings, taking the first position the final lap. Race 2 saw Rajini drop to fourth position owing to a rider error. Nevertheless, Rajini amassed 38 points in the Round 4 and was looking ahead to a podium in the championship.
However, Rajini could not replicate this performance in the final round of the championship. A collision with a crashed bike brought his first race to an abrupt end. While the team managed to fix the bike before the Race 2, a faulty clutch forced Rajini to retire from the race denying him any points in Round 5.
Rajini won the inaugural season of the Malaysia Superbike Championship, in 2015. However, this year, the 35-year-old Chennai resident had to give in to the acclaimed Australian road racing champion, Cameron Donald.
