August sales of the Yamaha Ray have shot past that of the Fascino, making it the most popular scooter brand in the company’s line-up. Yamaha cumulatively sold 20,782 units of the Ray Z and the Ray ZR in the last month, which is 1,900 units more than the now dethroned best-seller, the Fascino.
The Yamaha Ray had made a big impact in the Indian market when it first went on sale back in 2012. The scooter’s sharp styling had struck the right chord with the youth, helping Yamaha garner a significant market share in the 110cc scooter segment. However, the sales had been waning over the past few months, reaching a new low of 4,500 units in December 2015. Now though with the launch of the Ray ZR, the sales have rapidly gained momentum with the Ray range breaching the 20,000 mark for the first time in this year.
The Yamaha Ray ZR is based on the same platform as the Ray, though the body lines have been revised to give it even more aggression. Under the skin, the Ray ZR gets a 113cc single-cylinder petrol engine, which develops 7bhp and 8Nm of torque. The Ray ZR is available in two versions – drum and disc, with prices starting at Rs 52,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi).
