- New electric two-wheeler under development
- Likely to be a scooter
- Could unveil a concept at 2020 Auto Expo
Suzuki is developing an electric two-wheeler for the Indian market. This development was confirmed by Koichiro Hirao, company head, Suzuki.
The top honcho didn’t reveal more details about this development, but mid last year, we reported that an electric scooter is being developed by the Japanese brand. We believe that the first EV to come out of Suzuki India will be an e-scooter. Suzuki gets its major sales from its scooter range, so it makes sense for the company to put its entire R&D efforts on that two-wheeler type.
A few weeks ago, there were rumours about the government banning the sale of non-electric two-wheelers that are below 150cc by 2025. This news sent shivers down the two-wheeler makers' spine who came out with their individual responses.
Like the rest of the brands, Suzuki too is looking for a concrete EV policy as it will help them plan their future line-up as well as expansion. Without a policy, two-wheeler makers will find it difficult to find the right balance. We can expect Suzuki to show a concept EV at the next Auto Expo. This will help them gauge everyone’s response to the product.
