- Prototype battery unveiled
- Includes around 32 brands
- Could be produced by 2025
The Swappable Battery Motorcycle Consortium is a group of manufacturers that have come together to develop and standardize battery-swapping technology for electric two-wheelers for ease of use and accessibility. Now, the SBMC has unveiled the first prototype of its battery design.
Well, the SBMC was formed in 2021 with KTM, Honda, Yamaha and Piaggio Group. As of now, the Consortium has around 32 motorcycle and component manufacturers like Suzuki, Triumph, Kymco, CFMoto, Samsung, Keeway and Kawasaki as well. In 2022, it developed its first swappable battery prototypes as part of the refinement and specification validation process.
While the prototype design has been revealed, the second phase of prototyping is planned for 2024. It is then that the trial testing will be done “in partnership with battery manufacturers, swapping station providers and OEMs”. Along with swapping tech, the SBMC is in talks related to cybersecurity and data protection as well. We can expect the standardised battery pack to go into production in the next couple of years.
