The road transport ministry has announced that by 2017 all two-wheelers will mandatorily have auto-headlamps. This will be a safety feature added to reduce the probabilities of accidents.
The new feature will ensure that the headlamps of a scooter or a motorcycle will be automatically switched on as soon as the two-wheeler's engine is started. The rider won't be able to switch off the lamps unless the engine of the vehicle is switched off.
The road transport ministry has consulted with different two-wheeler manufacturers and agreed upon this idea of imposing this safety feature from April 2017 onwards. The new feature wouldn't cost much neither to the manufacturer, nor the buyer as it only involves the exclusion of the on/off switch for the headlight.
The other safety feature the ministry has proposed is an additional sound device on the two-wheeler. In case of a crash, this device will notify the surrounding people for help by alerting them with the alarm.
In India, the highest number of fatalities on two-wheelers were recorded last year with 32,524 people dead and 1,27,452 injured in accidents. The new features will be introduced in a bid to reduce these fatalities in case of a crash. The auto-headlamps are available on vehicles abroad and have helped catching the attention of people. It goes to see now how it fares in India.
