UM Motorcycles is interested in launching a new adventure bike in India. This news was confirmed by Rajeev Mishra, MD, UM Motorcycles India in a press conference yesterday.
While the company has always talked about focusing on the cruiser market between 200cc and 500cc, the news of it developing an adventure bike isn’t surprising. Since the beginning, UM Motorcycles have been clear of doing business only in the niche segments. Launching the Renegade Sport S and the Renegade Commando were the first step to enter the cruiser market, which is currently dominated by Royal Enfield. Over the last couple of years, there has been a steady increase in the number of adventure bikes in the country. However, other than the Royal Enfield Himalayan, none of the other bikes are on the affordable side. This is the reason why UM wants to get into this segment and offer an affordable adventure bike. Just like the cruisers, UM plans to do extensive market study before launching one in India.
The company already has the DSR range which is being sold in the South American markets. However, these bikes are available in smaller displacements – 125cc, 200cc and 223cc. The company wants to bring in an adventure bike with no less than 250cc engine capacity. The company has got a DSR-like motorcycle ready for European launch as well, so the quality will not be an issue.
UM says this new adventure bike will be ready by late 2017-early 2018. We believe that this new bike might be showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo.
